The Acid Test

We at Apollo are striving to insure safety is instinctive to our employees.  Once in a while we get an “acid test”, a situation arises that test weather or not safety is truly instinctive.

The Test – after 3 weeks of fighting the installation of a 25ft deep man-hole the job was coming to an end.  The man-hole was in place all the picking eye holes were plugged with grout, the concrete truck was backing up to back fill, and the crew was picking up for the day.

Suddenly during backfill concrete broke through the picking eye holes and started pouring into the center of the manhole.  Two guys reacted and did not plan for the re-entry into the man-hole.  So glad nobody was injured.

This “acid test” showed that safety is not instinctive through out our company. Regardless how good you think your safety culture is we can never stop trying to improve.  Safety cannot  rest or take breaks.

SAFETY AT HOME and “Back Again” Apollo Superintendant (Dan Doyle) Safety Meeting

Our Job Site has been hit with a terrible tragedy. For those of you who don’t know, a member of the Picnic Point work force, an Apollo subcontract employee is presumed drowned and friends and family are searching at this time for him. I would like to take this time to remember Roulon (Rue) and to stress the importance of off the job safety. What happened this weekend is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and co-workers. As an Apollo Superintendant I am in charge of safety on this job, please don’t take it personal when I remind you to wear your safety glasses, button up your harness, cap the rebar or do anything else relating to safety. I am doing it as a friend not as a foe. Our goal is to send everyone home safe each and every day. We also speak about off the job safety and how important that is! It is so easy to mow or trim the yard without safety glasses, trim the tree or shrubs and not even think twice about it until it is too late. Last year a close friend of mine picked up a plastic gas can (which is against OSHA regulations) in his diesel repair shop on a Saturday morning to fill his pressure washer when it rubbed his jeans causing a static electricity discharge and caused the can to explode. He was engulfed in flames and had to roll in a puddle of water to extinguish himself. He was covered with 1,2, and 3erd degree burns over 30% of his body and spent 30 days in the burn center here at Harborview burn center. We strive to be safe on the job site and need to strive just as hard to be safe off the job as well. What happened this weekend was a terrible accident and a harsh reminder of how important safety really is. As we go forward on this job please keep Roulon in your thoughts and prayers and remember the importance of safety not only on the job but off the job as well.

Injury Prevention and Investigation

Injury Prevention and Investigation

Apollo Sheet Metal and Apollo Inc, were recently awarded an EMR of .29. With this rating, we have officially become the safest company in Washington State, beating out even non-construction companies. As the Safety Officer at Apollo, I am frequently asked how we do it. How do we integrate safety into the culture of our company? How do we get buy in from employees? How do we control cost?  How do we deal with fraudulent injury claims? The simplest answer to these questions is this: It takes a team.

An obvious key to lowering your company’s EMR is injury prevention.  95% of employees who become injured on the job are hard working, honest employees. This sub-group does not pose much of a problem for a given company. The problem lies with the other 5%. What do you do when you suspect that an injured employee might not actually be injured? At Apollo, we use a team of resources: health care providers, claim managers, investigators, nurse case managers, and yes – lawyers. The most important aspect to controlling cost on a suspicious claim is to activate an investigative team early in the process. As soon as a supervisor becomes suspicious of an injury, it is crucial that your team of professionals be brought on board immediately. Spending money on these resources up front will undoubtedly save your company thousands of dollars at the end. To combat fraudulent claims, you must assemble a reliable investigative team; the state will not do it for you.

At Apollo, our investigative team consists of the following:

Claims Manager and Retro group:

Fall Protection Works

Vice President (Amy Jenne) Presents Safety Award to Juan Sanches

On March 25th 2011 Juan Sanchez was spared serious injury because he correctly utilized his fall protection equipment. While installing a filler panel between two gang forms, Juan’s positioning hook slipped off the whaler causing Juan to fall. Because Juan was properly tied off with his fall arresting lanyard, he did not fall to the ground. Juan was approximately 15 feet off the ground when he fell backwards and was saved because Juan did things right and everything worked as designed. Thanks for doing things right!
